Tomsk universities and SRIs formalize the Big University charter

The heads of Tomsk universities, institutes of the Tomsk Scientific Center (TSC) SB RAS and Tomsk Research Medical Center RAS signed the Charter of the Big University; the document talks about joining efforts to form an ecosystem of city-university, the press service of the consortium of scientific and educational organizations of the region told.

Earlier it was reported that the scientific and educational complex of the Tomsk region was recognized as key to the socio-economic development of the region. In order to combine resources and increase competitiveness on the world stage, universities and research institutes of the region decided to create a Big University of Tomsk, in which all of them will maintain their autonomy. It was planned to formalize the integration by signing the charter of the Big University.

The signing of the charter took place on Friday evening, reports a representative of the consortium of scientific and educational organizations. In the document the participants commit themselves to join efforts to form a city-university ecosystem and provide Tomsk with world-class education. Universities and research institutes will create various joint educational programs for undergraduate, postgraduate and resident students.

"The Charter is a very important step in the creation of the Tomsk Big University... It is symbolic that the historic document was signed on Higher Education Teacher's Day, which is now celebrated in Russia for the first time. Today we think about the future of the region, and this day is associated with the development of the scientific and educational complex," the press service of the regional administration quotes Governor Sergey Zhvachkin.

The establishment of the Big University, in the opinion of Eduard Galazhinsky, Rector of Tomsk State University (TSU), opens up new opportunities for Tomsk scientists. "We can see the results of such consolidation - Tomsk universities have shown themselves very well in the Priority 2030 project and have already received support from the government, the construction of an inter-university campus and other big projects are planned," the rector said.

It was also reported that a recognizable name for the Big University is currently being discussed. For example, students have proposed the option of UTU – United Tomsk University. However, this name has not yet been approved by the Tomsk research institutes.

Who signed the charter

The charter of the Big University was signed by the heads of all six universities: Tomsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics, Tomsk State Pedagogical University, Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building and Siberian State Medical University.

The charter was also signed by the heads of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center and related research institutes: Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science, Institute of High Current Electronics, Institute of Petroleum Chemistry, V.E. Zuev Institute of Atmospheric Optics, and Institute of Monitoring of Climatic and Ecological Systems. In addition, the charter of the Big University was signed by the head of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center, uniting six more institutes.
